Island Cottages:

Interior Design

Project in progress.

Brief:

To redesign the interiors of a series of existing timber cottages within an island resort setting, aligning them with the updated identity developed across the wider hospitality spaces. The aim was to create a cohesive language that balances contemporary furniture with traditional textiles and finishes, while respecting the simplicity and character of the original structures.

Outcome:

The architectural language of the cottages lends itself naturally to an interpretation that sits between local vernacular and international cabin typologies. The interiors were conceived to feel equally at home as rural rice barns found across Indonesia, or as contemporary timber cabins seen in regions known for wooden architecture such as Scandinavia, Japan or North America.

Set amongst grass and palm trees, the interior design approach drew on a modern log cabin aesthetic, with a colour palette informed by the surrounding landscape. Natural tones and tactile materials were introduced to create warmth and restraint, ensuring the cottages felt grounded in their environment while remaining consistent with the broader design direction across the resort by adding touches of locally made textiles.
